Sara Shams
Award-winning disability rights & diversity advocate, speaker, model, and health care professional.

Sara is a bilateral above knee amputee, disability advocate, speaker, model, and health care professional. The lack of visible representation of people with disabilities in the nineties impacted how Sara perceived herself and identified with her disability. Sara’s journey to embracing her quirks was facilitated by an adaptive mindset and a conscious decision to work on identifying, challenging, and externalising her critical inner voice.

Sara believes that embracing our differences and recognising what makes us unique is our superpower. She is passionate about establishing equal opportunities, increasing representation of people with disabilities particularly from diverse backgrounds, and creating authentically inclusive environments where all persons can thrive.

With a background in policy, Sara believes taking an intersectional approach to addressing societal challenges will result in improved outcomes for all individuals.

Sara has recently been awarded the 2024 Minister’s Multicultural Award  for her advocacy work on behalf of culturally and linguistically diverse people with disability.

Sara is also an ambassador for International Day of People with Disabilities for 2024.
